My experience also allows me to make an accurately assess of the work required. If a scratch has only impacted the lacquer (or, with solid colours, hasn’t broken through to the primer), I will attempt to cut and polish the damage without having to paint the panel at all. This isn’t always possible, but it something that I will try to do where possible.
Cutting and polishing allows me to smooth out the scratch with a fine grade of abrasive paper. I then use cutting compound and polish to restore the paintwork and its original shine.
